Australian cricketer makes heartbreaking decision after being riddled by concussion issues throughout nightmare career
- Will Pucovski has retired from professional cricket
- Talented batsman has suffered a series of head knocks
- He was seen as a future Test cricket superstar
Will Pucovski has retired from professional cricket after years of concussion problems.
According to 9News, the 26-year-old made the decision to retire from the sport several months ago, but his retirement was only made official by Cricket Victoria this week.
He is one of the most talented young prodigies to emerge from Australia this century, but his career has been regularly interrupted by injuries and concussions.
He hit 62 on his Test debut against India in January 2021, but was ruled out of the next match after sustaining a shoulder injury in the field.
The Victorian has also taken time off from football due to his mental health, admitting last month that this was likely to be due to his concussions.
“I think the mental health issues go back to my first concussion when I was about 15 or 16,” Pucovski told the Vic State Cricket Podcast.
‘I suffer from a lot of concussion symptoms, which have never gone away in the past seven or eight years.’
Reporter Tom Morris of 9News had this to say about the latest Pucovski news: ‘As a batsman he flourished at an early age, hitting back-to-back double tons for Victoria.
“This confirmation is not only sad for him and Victorian cricket, but also for Australian cricket.”
