Channel Seven’s Sunrise continues reign as Australia’s top breakfast show as it beats Nine’s Today in TV ratings

Channel Seven’s Sunrise has been Australia’s most popular morning program for many years.

The breakfast show, presented by Matt ‘Shirvo’ Shirvington and Natalie Barr, has beaten Channel Nine’s Today to an average share of 43.2 per cent of the metro audience in 2024, 2.4 percentage points ahead of its rival.

Seven’s victory is extra sweet as Nine was expected to take the lead in the ratings battle after Today played a key role in the network’s Olympic coverage.

According to TV TonightThe latest figures from Total TV show that Sunrise has had an average national audience of 389,100 in the calendar year to date.

Today, presented by Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo, reached a total TV audience of 325,300 in the same period.

The national total TV ratings combine the metro research with viewers in regional centres and fans who watch the show via on-demand platforms.

Sunrise also scored 3.1 million viewers across social platforms, with 1.58 million monthly YouTube views so far.

Weekend Sunrise has also delivered strong viewing figures, averaging 383,700 TV viewers year to date, compared to 287,600 for Today.

Meanwhile, The Morning Show also dominates its time slot with an average of 3.2 million viewers per month, reports TV black box.

Still, Sunrise got a shock last month when Today narrowly beat the fan favorite for a week.

Channel Nine’s morning program averaged 231,000 viewers in the metropolitan area in July.

Seven’s Sunrise followed closely with an average of 225,000 viewers.

It was the first time in seven years that Today had managed to attract the largest breakfast TV audience for an entire week in the country’s five largest metropolitan areas.

In June, Matt Shirvington spoke about his experiences as co-host of Sunrise, a year after he took on the role.

The 44-year-old took over as co-host from David Koch on June 13 last year, alongside Natalie Barr, and his first day was received extremely well by viewers.

Reflecting on his journey, Shirvington expressed his gratitude for the opportunity he was given.

“It’s just amazing… there’s never been a day when I’ve driven to work in the middle of the night without anyone else there, even in the winter when it’s pouring rain, where I’ve thought, ‘Am I going to do this again?'” he told The Sunday Telegraph.

“When you’re on TV for almost four hours every day, five days a week – and the schedule is so full – it’s a very fast-paced program,” he explained.

“You don’t have any free time; it’s been a wild ride, the last 12 months,” he continued.

The former athlete also said he was proud of the show’s continued success, which maintains its position as Australia’s top breakfast program.
