49ers coach jokes about what Christian McCaffrey was thinking when he married Olivia Culpo: ‘No offense’

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan joked that “obsessed” football player Christian McCaffrey was distracted by thoughts of his sport as he walked down the aisle to marry his wife Olivia Culpo.

The couple married in June and invited family and friends to witness the ceremony in Rhode Island.

But Shanahan believes his running back McCaffrey, who is currently dealing with a calf injury, was thinking about football even on his special day.

β€œWhen you do every rep, every walkthrough, everything you have to do, you’re just very deliberate about everything,” he told reporters earlier this week.

“When he walks down the aisle to get married, he’s probably thinking about his feet and how to walk routes,” he continued. “No offense to Olivia.”

Shanahan provided the answer when asked how McCaffrey, who is currently out of training, would get back in shape in time for Week 1 and look like himself again.

“He’s obsessed with it,” Shanahan said. “And so when you get into those situations where you get hurt and you can’t do all that stuff, at least he’s put the work in first. So that stuff comes back quickly.

“But he understands what it takes to play in this game, especially at the level that he does. And not many people play at that level unless they are like that.”

After he and Culpo tied the knot in front of teammates including George Kittle, Brock Purdy and Kyle Juszczyk, McCaffrey is hoping for a strong year for the 49ers.
