Redland Bay Village: Terrified shoppers forced to evacuate after fire erupts in underground carpark

Terrified shoppers were forced to leave a popular shopping centre after thick smoke filled the underground car park.

Emergency services, including paramedics, rushed to Redland Bay Village on Broadwater Terrace in Queensland at around 1.20pm on Saturday.

The fire, believed to be a burning car, was under control shortly before 2 p.m. No customers were injured.

Angela Soward was in the parking lot when the fire broke out.

“The fire broke out at the back of the car park, well away from the entrance to the shops themselves,” she wrote on Facebook.

She said her brother thought a car was on fire.

“My brother was about 30 feet away when it happened. He said it looked like a car, but from the angle he couldn’t tell what make it was.”

Another person shared on social media that the situation was “so scary.”

Shoppers were advised to avoid the area until the smoke clears, leaving a “burnt chemical smell” in the air.

Redland Bay WholeLife Pharmacy and Healthfoods took to social media to let customers know the store would be closed until 9am on Sunday.

“We are currently closed and do not have access to the pharmacy,” the pharmacy said.

‘The authorities have said that it could be a few hours before they can say it is safe to go in. Unfortunately, the pharmacy will therefore remain closed.’
