Byerwen mine tragedy: Horror as worker dies at mine site after collision between two vehicles – just weeks after another worker died at the same site
A worker has died in a mine, just weeks after another fatality occurred at the same site.
Emergency services were called to the Byerwen mine, near Glenden in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, on Thursday after a worker was killed in a car crash.
It is believed that two vehicles, including a truck, collided, with the smaller vehicle driving underneath the larger vehicle. Courier Mail reported.
Queensland Ambulance Service emergency workers were called to the mine just after 1pm.
A QAS spokeswoman said paramedics assessed a patient with life-threatening injuries at a workplace on Wollombi Rd.
In the Queensland Parliament, Resources and Critical Minerals Minister Scott Stewart said: “I am aware of reports of a fatal accident at QCoal’s Byerwen coal mine… I understand emergency services are currently on the scene.”
“There will be a thorough investigation into this fatal accident,” Stewart said.
“My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of those involved.”

Resources Health and Safety Queensland will conduct an investigation at the site.
The police and the Forensic Crash Unit also arrived at the scene.
On Saturday, August 3, 48-year-old Chris Schloss, a father of five, died at the same location when he was hit by a crane.
“While it is too early to determine the cause of the incident, initial reports indicate it involved a pick and carry crane,” Resources Safety and Health Queensland said at the time of the tragedy.
“The QCoal family has suffered a devastating loss following the death of Chris Schloss in an incident at the Byerwen mine on Saturday,” QCoal group managing director James Black said in a statement.
‘Chris has been part of the QCoal family for many years and has been closely involved in the development of Byerwen since its launch.
Our thoughts are with Chris’ wife Amanda, his children and their entire family at this terrible time.
‘The passing of such a long-serving, senior and much-loved member of the QCoal team has naturally shocked us.
“His family is trying to cope with the worst news you can ever hear and we are helping them through this tragedy.”
