Southport Police sergeant shoots himself at station on the Gold Coast

An internal investigation is underway after a police officer was injured after accidentally shooting himself in the foot.

The male sergeant is believed to have had his Glock service pistol loaded and in his holster when it went off at Southport police station on the Gold Coast on Monday night.

A Queensland Police spokesman confirmed the officer was taken to hospital with an injury to his left toe and “has now been discharged”.

“No other officers were injured,” the spokesperson said.

‘Support is provided to the officer and colleagues at the station.’

The incident is currently being investigated by Gold Coast Police.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland has also been alerted.

It is the latest in a series of ‘friendly fire’ incidents involving Queensland Police weapons.

Last year, two officers were rushed to hospital in separate incidents.

One case involved a senior officer who was injured by a stray bullet during a training exercise at a shooting club north of Brisbane.

The other incident resulted in a shooting where a male sergeant was accidentally shot in the calf during a target practice in Childers, south of Bundaberg in central Queensland.

In 2018, another officer accidentally shot himself in the calf, in what police said at the time was a “violation of our strict safety procedures.”

Kym Slade, 48, committed suicide with a police issued weapon at Loganholme police station in July 2023.

Friends, family and colleagues of the officer received immediate assistance from Queensland Police after the tragedy.
