Shane Ramsey: Family of Perth tradie left ‘numb’ after he ended up in a coma following scooter crash in Bali – with the extent of the damage still unknown
The family of a carpenter who suffered a fractured skull after a horrific moped accident say they feel “numb” as they wait for him to wake from a coma.
Shane Ramsey, 30, was on holiday in Bali for a close friend’s wedding and was riding a moped in Seminyak on Sunday when disaster struck.
The 30-year-old man crashed into a pole and was rushed to hospital, where he has been in a coma ever since.
He was not wearing a helmet and had no travel insurance, which would have cost him only about $50 a week.
His family has already paid $70,000 to have him undergo emergency neurosurgery, while hospital bills are running at $9,000 a day.
Mr Ramsey may also need to be taken back to Perth by ambulance, at an estimated cost of $150,000.

His mother, Catherine Ramsey, immediately flew over from Perth to be with her son.
She told Daily Mail Australia that Ramsey suffered three brain haemorrhages and a fractured skull.
“He is stable at this time, but the true extent of the damage to his brain is unknown at this time,” she said.
‘He is still in a coma and we will only know the outcome in a few days.
‘I just know that the damage is enormous and we don’t know if he will come out of the coma or if he will have lasting problems.
“We’re holding on, we just feel numb right now.”
Mr Ramsey was on his way to watch a UFC fight with friends when the accident happened.
His mother previously told Nine News she would sell their family home if necessary.
“I just want to take him home, we’re in a strange country,” she said.
Doctors are not yet sure how extensive the damage to his brain is.
Mr. Ramsey had plans to buy a house when he returned home.

A GoFundMe was launched on Monday to help pay Mr. Ramsey’s medical bills and build a future medical evacuation home.
At the time of publication, over $74,000 has been raised.
Mr. Ramsey had just completed a three-year apprenticeship and was looking to the future.
The carpenter’s former boss also took to Facebook on Monday to draw attention to the fundraiser.
He remembers running into his former student a few weeks ago, who described Mr. Ramsey as a great guy.
“You forget how f***ing fragile life can be (and) how quickly everything can change,” he wrote.
