Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth weather: What you need to know for the week ahead

Thunderstorms are forecast for Australia’s east coast as a massive weather system moves across the country.

A complex area of low pressure near the coast of Western Australia will begin to weaken on Monday, but its effects will still bring strong winds, gales and cooler conditions to the south of the country.

Maryam Al-Ansari, meteorologist at Weatherzone, said the system is expected to move across South Australia on Monday.

“There is a front currently moving across South Australia that will reach Victoria tomorrow,” she told Daily Mail Australia.

“That would mean the storm will reach the East Coast on Tuesday night and Wednesday.”

Although the system is weakening as it moves east, it is possible it could regain strength and cause thunderstorms in Sydney and Melbourne.

“Looking towards Sydney, there could be potential for thunderstorms on Tuesday evening, but it looks like most of the activity will occur on Wednesday,” Ms Al-Ansari said.

‘Thunderstorms are likely along the coast and possibly in the eastern suburbs.

‘Storms are likely in Melbourne tomorrow.

‘The areas most at risk are the northern and eastern suburbs through to the Mornington Peninsula.’

Above average temperatures and generally dry weather are expected across much of inland Australia.

Meanwhile, Australia’s Top End is expected to become very warm overnight due to increased humidity, with some showers likely in northern Queensland.

Ms Al-Ansari believed that warmer conditions set to arrive towards the end of the week could signal an early start to spring.

“We may be getting nicer weather, but whether that means the end of winter, I’m not sure,” she said.

‘I can say that there will be a few systems coming through this week and then it looks like the sun will shine again.

‘In Melbourne there are a few days when the temperature drops into the twenties. It also seems to be getting warmer in Adelaide.

“It looks like an early spring is coming this weekend, but I can’t guarantee that nothing will happen later.”
