Kolkata rape-murder: Women’s organisation holds ‘mashal julush’ in Siliguri
A torchlight protest was held in Siliguri in North Bengal under the slogan “Loud and Clear” to condemn the rape and murder of a junior doctor at a hospital in Kolkata earlier this month.
The ‘mashal julush’ protest march, led by a women’s volunteer organisation, was held to highlight the incident at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
A woman protester told ANI, “We want strict punishment for the culprits. Women should be given security. We are not from any political organisation. We have complete faith in the system. We just want justice.”
Another protester, Chumki Shah, said: “I also have a daughter. She is not safe. We have to decide to ensure her safety. We want justice.”
One protester, Prapti Shah, said: “This has to stop. Doctors give us life. No one should have taken the life of a doctor. No girl can say she was not seriously touched. This has to stop. How much more can we tolerate?”
On August 16, the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) called a 12-hour general strike in Siliguri.
The strike disrupted normal life in Siliguri and most shops in the town remained closed since 6 pm.
The investigation into the case is ongoing, with the Central Investigation Department (CBI) using advanced techniques such as 3D laser mapping of the emergency department where the crime took place.
In addition, the CBI conducted psychological evaluations on the main suspect.
Sources confirmed that a psychologist from the CBI team arrived in Kolkata on Saturday to support the ongoing investigation.
The Supreme Court of India has also taken cognizance of the matter. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is heading a bench that will hear the case on August 20.
The case has also sparked widespread public protests, including outside the medical community.
Football fans protested at the Salt Lake Stadium, leading to the cancellation of the Durand Cup match between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal.
