Government appoints new ministers for spending, banking and corporate affairs

In the first major bureaucratic shakeup of its third term, the Narendra Modi government on Friday appointed new ministers for expenditure, banking, corporate affairs and defence, among others.

The Secretary, Ministry of Corporate Affairs and a 1991 batch officer in Madhya Pradesh, Manoj Govil, has been appointed Secretary, Expenditure Department, Ministry of Finance.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) also approved the appointment of Nagaraju Maddirala, an IAS officer of 1993 batch of the cadre from Tripura, as the new secretary of the Department of Financial Services (DFS). Maddirala will replace the present DFS secretary, Vivek Joshi, an IAS officer of 1989 batch of the cadre from Haryana, who has been transferred to the Department of Personnel and Training as secretary.

The post of expenditure minister fell vacant after T V Somanathan, a 1987 Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officer and the current finance minister and expenditure minister, was appointed the next cabinet minister. Somanathan, a seasoned civil servant, will take over India’s top bureaucratic post from August 30, when the extended term of incumbent Rajiv Gauba ends.

Deepti Gaur Mukherjee, a 1993-batch IAS cadre from Madhya Pradesh and currently CEO of the National Health Authority, will be the new secretary, Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA).

The ACC has also approved the appointment of RK Singh, a 1991 batch Kerala cadre IAS officer, as the new Defence Secretary. K Srinivas, a 1989 batch Gujarat cadre officer, has been appointed the Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, from his present post as the Secretary, Minority Affairs.

The government has appointed Punya Salila Srivastava as the next Health Minister who will take over the post after the retirement of Apurva Chandra, the current Health Minister, on September 30, 2024.

Sanjeev Kumar, a 1993-batch IAS cadre from Maharashtra and the current chairman of the Airports Authority of India, has been appointed secretary, Department of Defence Production by the ACC.
