So much for your summer holiday! Spain is being battered by rain and wind, forcing tourists to flee beaches and Ibiza, yachts are being wrecked and flights to Mallorca are being cancelled, creating a travel nightmare

Spanish holiday resorts were hit by heavy rain and strong winds today as an August heatwave gave way to storms.

Due to bad weather, flights to Ibiza and Mallorca were cancelled and delayed.

This morning, tornado-like waterspouts were seen off the coast of the Majorcan town of Santanyi and then Port Adriano, raising concerns among bystanders on dry land about the safety of small boats and jet skis still at sea.

Eight people were injured when a yacht crashed into rocks in Cala Saona, Formentera. Six of them had to be taken to hospital for treatment after a dramatic rescue.

Photos from the scene show the ship lying on its side against the rocks as its occupants struggle to keep their balance on the deck, wearing life jackets.

Several ambulances arrived on the scene to help the men from the boat and take them to hospital. A coast guard helicopter was also mobilized.

Ibiza and Formentera were the first to be hit by the storms, which then moved towards Mallorca and Menorca.

An orange weather alert had been issued for the islands, so the dramatic change in weather was predicted.

The Calvia City Council, which includes the popular British resort of Magaluf, responded by suspending local festivities and other outdoor activities planned for today and tomorrow.

As the storm raged today, emergency services in the holiday destination reported that trees had fallen in several streets and that a lightning bolt had damaged a police station.

Parts of the Costa Blanca, including resorts such as Benidorm and Calpe, have also been hit by heavy rain and hail. Weather agency Aemet has raised its storm warning from yellow to orange. Bad weather is forecast to continue until tomorrow.

Further north, 300 people had to be evacuated from a supermarket in Ontinyent, near Valencia, when heavy rain caused the roof to partially collapse.

But just like earlier this year, when the Balearics and Costa Blanca were hit by bad weather, British holidaymakers on the Costa del Sol were still able to sunbathe under blue skies and temperatures of 32 degrees today.

And weather forecasters are predicting plenty of sunshine and stifling heat for resorts like Marbella in the coming days.

In late June, a summer storm caused chaos in Madrid, with blue skies giving way to hail, torrential rain and strong winds.

Trees were felled and locals and holidaymakers had to take refuge in bars and shop entrances due to the incredible change in weather.

There were floods in a number of metro stations in the Spanish capital, causing delays to metro trains.

The stairs leading to the Canal Station on Line 7 of the Madrid Metro turned into a river, as astonished onlookers took selfies of the scene.

Two weeks earlier, large parts of eastern Spain and the Balearic Islands were hit by torrential rain.

Due to bad weather, normal flights at Palma airport in Mallorca were suspended. Planes were diverted to Menorca, Ibiza and Barcelona.

One of the airport’s duty-free shops had to close after rain came through the ceiling.

In San Antonio, Ibiza, gutters overflowed in some places, forcing holidaymakers to step over human waste.

The provinces of Murcia and Alicante were also badly hit, as cars were swept off the streets by flooding.

Less than two weeks ago, hail and rain forced tourists in Benidorm to take cover during a day of extreme weather in the famous Costa Blanca resort.

Footage of the storm, which lasted about 15 minutes and ended another scorching day on the Costas, showed pellets of ice falling to the ground beneath grey clouds that appeared out of nowhere to replace the blue sky.

Holidaymakers packed their belongings and ran from Levante Beach in Benidorm as the storm approached.

Other British and Irish tourists were photographed dancing in the rain, beer in hand, as they sat on pub terraces due to the changeable weather.
