Man City ‘shut down outrageous claim’ that they’ve agreed deal with Liverpool winger Luis Diaz… after reports in Spain suggested champions were ‘willing to pay £60m’ and Reds were ‘readying a replacement

  • The Colombian winger has scored 24 goals in 98 games since joining in 2022
  • He found the net twice in the 4-1 victory over Sevilla at Anfield on Sunday afternoon
  • Reports circulated today that Man City were on the hunt for the title rival’s star player

Manchester City have denied they have signed a deal for Liverpool star Luis Diaz after rumours emerged the champions were ‘willing to pay £60million’ for the Colombian winger.

Rumours were circulating today that Pep Guardiola’s side were planning to sign the capable striker from their title rivals, with El Chiringuito TV suggesting that a ‘five-year agreement’ had been struck between the two parties.

The show’s reporter Marcos Benito added that City were ‘willing to pay €70 million’ for the winger.

But the eight-time Premier League champions have debunked the sensational claims, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

He posted on X, formerly Twitter: ‘Manchester City sources deny any agreement with Luís Diaz after recent reports.’

The shocking news came after Diaz scored twice in his first away match under new head coach Arne Slot during a convincing 4-1 win over Spanish side Sevilla at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

The Colombian has been in top form since joining the Reds two years ago, but has failed to match the stunning goalscoring record of Sadio Mane, whom he replaced at Anfield.

While Mane scored 120 goals in 269 games for the Reds, an average of one goal every 2.24 games, Diaz scored 24 in 98, an average of approximately one goal every 4.08 games.

Diaz, 27, started last season in good form but lost his starting place through his own fault after his father was kidnapped in Colombia and he was absent for a period.

Slot and his coaching staff have organised individual sessions to work on the attackers’ movements without the ball and Diaz already appears to be benefiting from that extra coaching.

Last weekend, Diaz cut inside from the left and fired the ball into the top corner without hesitation.

His second was a tap-in, but he was in the right place at the right time.

There has been a lot of speculation about Diaz’s future this summer. Recent reports have suggested he is a potential candidate for the Saudi Arabian Pro League, a league that aims to attract younger players to the country.

The 27-year-old has been one of Liverpool’s most eye-catching players since joining from Porto for £37.5million in 2022.

PSG are also reportedly considering hiring Diaz as a replacement for the left-wing position following the departure of Kylian Mbappe.

In May, he also emerged as ‘Barcelona’s top summer target’ despite the country’s financial constraints, with the Liverpool star reportedly ‘open to a move to the Catalan giants to fulfil a childhood dream’.
