Keen-eyed viewers think they’ve finally discovered the symbolism behind Anthony Ammirati’s tattoo, after he went viral for his hilarious failed pole vault attempt.

The Frenchman was eliminated from the pole vault semi-finals on Saturday after his knee – and his protruding penis – caught on the 5.70-metre bar.

His unfortunate moment went viral on social media and after finishing 12th in his semi-final with a best time of 5.60m he called it a ‘big disappointment’.

Fans have now also turned their attention to the writhing snake wrapped around his right arm and think it tells us all we need to know.

“Anthony Ammirati will never have to explain the forearm tattoo again. Message received and understood,” wrote one fan on X, formerly Twitter.

“Never forget: this was the moment the tattoo had meaning,” another tweet read.

Ammirati has had the tattoo for a few years and in April 2022 the tattoo was posted to Instagram.

He’s not the first Olympian to find his netherworld gear on the beam. The same fate befell Japanese pole vaulter Hiroki Ogita during the qualifying rounds in Rio 2016.

Neither of Ammirati’s compatriots Robin Emig nor Thibault Collet qualified for the final, although they did not suffer the same problems. Monday’s final was won by Sweden’s Armand Duplantis.

“It’s a big disappointment,” Ammirati told the French Athletics Federation. “I’m a little disappointed because I didn’t miss anything on the third attempt at 5.70m. What I missed was a little bit of jumping in training to fine-tune the settings. Just a technical session.”

He added: ‘I was physically 100 percent, but I was still missing a little bit of pole vaulting.

‘The conditions were good. It’s the first time I start a race without stress.

‘As a total outsider, I had only one goal: to interact with the audience. I was almost there.’

Ammirati’s remarkable gaffe quickly went viral on social media, with fans in stitches as his genitals cost him a podium spot.

“Anthony Ammirati failed the bar and the commentators are already having a hard time acknowledging what happened. Help, I’m dying,” one user posted on X.

“Bad luck, but also a good flex,” another noted.

“The best way to lose… man’s ego is still there,” said someone else.
