Team GB finished fourth in the men’s 4x100m medley relay on Sunday evening, narrowly missing out on a medal.

Oliver Morgan was tasked with getting his team off to a strong start in the final men’s swimming event at the Paris Games, an event in which the United States and China were expected to battle for gold.

Adam Peaty has been struggling with illness in recent days and missed the mixed relay, but after a great start he put in a strong performance to keep Team GB in the race.

Peaty’s breaststroke performance briefly moved Britain into second place after 200 metres, but Duncan Scott and Matthew Williams were unable to keep their team in the medal places as a jubilant home crowd forced France into third place.

The race was exciting until the end, but thanks to an incredible finish from Pan Zhanle, China won the gold with a time of 3:27.46.

The United States had to settle for silver in a time of 3:28.01, the first time in the country’s history that they had been defeated in this event.

The only other time the US has not won the 4x100m medley relay since the event was introduced in 1960 was at the 1980 Games in the Soviet Union, which they boycotted.
