Deadpool & Wolverine remains at the top of the box office with $97M as the Marvel film becomes the highest-grossing R-rated film EVER

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman continue to wear the box office crown after their blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine took the top spot for the second week in a row – as expected.

The bromance between two of the fan-favorite characters grossed $97 million last weekend.

The film about Deadpool trying to save his universe by inviting a version of Wolverine to help him has grossed nearly $400 million domestically. Worldwide, the film, co-written by Reynolds, director Shawn Levy and others, has grossed $824 million.

The film has surpassed the total gross of both previous Deadpool films and has surpassed Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ ($371.1 million) as the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time in the U.S., although according to The Hollywood Reporterthat number has not been adjusted for inflation.

The former box office champ, starring Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones as Tornado, took in a modest $22.6 million, finishing in second place.

The action film is doing well worldwide and has grossed over $374.3 million worldwide to date.

Universal Studios, the film’s developer, is looking to drum up excitement for the thriller with special week-long 4DX screenings in select U.S. cities beginning on August 30.

In third place was M. Knight Shyamalan’s Trap debut.
