Team GB men’s hockey team suffer penalty shootout heartbreak against 10-man India as they crash out of the Paris Olympics quarter-finals

The British men’s hockey team have been knocked out of the Paris Olympics after losing to India on penalties in the quarter-finals.

Paul Revington’s team started strongly and looked to be in pole position to qualify for the semi-finals, but India were reduced to ten men in the second half after Amit Rohidas was sent off for hitting Will Calnan in the face with his hockey stick.

However, India took the lead shortly after through captain Harmanpreet Singh, but Lee Morton restored the equaliser.

Great Britain continued to hunt for a winner in the next two quarters but failed to make a breakthrough. India held firm and forced a shoot-out.

The first two penalties from both teams were successfully converted, but Lee Williamson then missed the target and Phillip Roper saw his effort saved by Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejash.

It was heartbreaking for Team GB, who had played most of the match with an extra man

The British men’s team has not won an Olympic medal since 1988

Raj Kumar Pal coolly fired in the winning goal as India won 4-2 on penalties.

His goal prompted wild celebrations from the Indian players, but it was a disappointment for the British team.

They impressed in the group stage, coming back from two goals down to draw against world number one Netherlands.

But on Sunday morning they were narrowly defeated by India and will leave Paris empty-handed.

The men’s team has not won an Olympic medal since 1988 and it will be at least 40 years before the next Games are held in Los Angeles in 2028.

The British women will play their own quarter-final on Monday.

They will face the reigning Olympic champions the Netherlands, after losing their last group match against Argentina on Saturday.
