Millions of pounds go up in smoke as huge fire destroys two luxury superyachts and a tourist boat in Greek port
This is the moment two luxury yachts and a tourist boat are destroyed by a blaze in a Greek port.
Shocking footage shows dark clouds of smoke billowing into the night sky late last night as flames engulfed ships in Marina Zea in Piraeus.
Explosions were heard as flames raged across the vessels, which local media reported included a 145-foot superyacht costing nearly £70,000 a week to charter, a 108-foot superyacht worth more than £6.5 million, and the tourist boat.
Ten vehicles with 26 firefighters were called to battle the raging fire, working hard all night to control the spread.
On Thursday night, firefighters were seen spraying water over the wreckage of one of the ships. The Coast Guard pulled out ten people trapped in the thick smoke from the nearby pier and brought them to safety.

It is believed that the fire started on the tourist ship and then spread to the two yachts, but authorities have not yet been able to determine the cause.
According to authorities, there were no people on board the vessels when the fire broke out.
One firefighter was taken to hospital with breathing problems after extinguishing the fire, but no one else was injured in the large blaze.
Ten fire brigade vehicles, three coast guard boats, a floating fire truck and private divers were needed to contain the fire on Thursday night.
A spokesman for the Greek coast guard told local media that the fire had been successfully extinguished early Friday morning, shortly after 1am.
This morning the port was closed with a floating barrier to prevent pollution of the sea by fuel and waste still in the water.
Firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading to more ships. The fire department and coastguard remained on site all day to monitor the situation.

The boats that went up in flames are the motor yachts ‘O’Riana’, which is 108 feet long, and the ‘Libra Y’, which is 139 feet long. Both are reported to have sunk.
Built by Golden Yachts in 2024, the superyacht O’Riana features a stunning, brand new interior and exterior, spread over three floors, and accommodates ten guests in five cabins.
The Italian superyacht Libra Y was built in 1977 by Picchiotti and can accommodate up to ten guests and eight crew.
Reports say the third yacht was a commercial tourist boat and the fire started there.
This happened just hours after a beautiful Italian superyacht sank off the coast of an idyllic Greek holiday island after a crew member left a side door open.
The 150ft mega yacht ‘Ethos’, which costs renters a whopping £180,000 a week, was spotted sailing off the coast of Kefalonia in Paleokaravo Bay.
A diver has been called in to explore local reefs while guards oversee efforts to salvage the yacht after it ran aground in Evretis Bay, where it was anchored.
But it was later revealed that the influx occurred after one of the crew members left a side door open – and did not have time to close it when the weather “turned”, according to local media reports.
The five tourists on board have been safely disembarked, along with the five crew members on board, who are part of the yacht’s hotel staff, Protothema reported yesterday.

The award-winning Maltese-flagged yacht is available for charter to up to 12 guests seeking a ‘relaxed’ charter experience.
The ship features five cabins, an onboard gym, a deck jacuzzi and jet skis, and promises guests “exceptional comfort at anchor or underway.”
Shocking footage showed the ship off balance on the blue waters around Kefalonia, a popular island in the Ionian Sea famous as the setting for Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.
The footage shows a private boat at the scene, with harbour guards monitoring the situation.
The cause of the incident has not yet been determined, local media Protothema reports.
