I have worked at Costco for 18 years – here are the 8 best membership perks
A Costco veteran has revealed the top benefits that make a membership with the warehouse-managed retailer worth it.
Currently, Costco’s standard membership costs $60 per year and its executive membership costs $120.
However, starting September 1, the costs will increase to $65 and $130 per year, respectively.
Veronica Thatcher, who has worked for the chain for almost two decades, has revealed her top eight tips and tricks for getting the most out of a membership.
“From saving money by buying groceries in bulk to taking advantage of executive member rewards, there are countless reasons why it’s beneficial to shop at the warehouse,” Thatcher said told Business Insider.

1. Generous return policy
Costco has a famously generous returns policy and offers its loyal customers a “100 percent satisfaction guarantee.”
According to Costco’s website, there is no expiration date for refunds, nor does it state that customers should bring their receipt.
Customers have tested the limits of this generous policy by returning two-year-old vacuum cleaners and sofas.
The chain, which is based in a warehouse, even lets customers return half-eaten food if there is a problem with the product or if it spoils before its sell-by date.
There are a few exceptions, including electronics purchased more than 90 days ago, cigarettes, alcohol, batteries, tires, gold bars, and gift cards.

2. Cheap gas prices
Costco has a gas station just for members with plenty of pumps so you don’t have to wait in line.
The stations also have helpful parking attendants and some have car washes, Thatcher explains.
She added that the gas is often cheaper than at other local gas stations.
Costco members can pay for gas using their physical membership card, through the Costco app, and in some locations even through a Costco Pay Fob.
3. Great benefits with an executive membership
The highest membership level, executive, gives customers two percent cash back on qualifying purchases.
The maximum cashback reward for an executive card is currently $1,000 per year, but once membership fees increase in September, that will increase to $1,250.
To earn the maximum cash back, a customer must spend at least $62,500 annually at Costco.
Customers can earn up to $1000 in cashback with the executive membership
4. Delicious deals at the food court
Costco is still offering the famous $1.50 hot dog and soda combo, despite Sam’s Club recently offering a lower price on the same combo for twelve cents less.
Another cheap treat is an 18-inch pizza for under $10.
Whether you want a quick bite to eat or want to gain some energy for the journey home after a day of shopping, the food court is a favourite with members.

5. Buy in bulk
Buying basic products like toilet paper and toothpaste can be a great way to save money in the long run, and Costco is very good at it.
“Wholesalers also typically offer lower prices on clothing, electronics and household necessities than competitors,” Thatcher wrote.
“I think my family of four saves close to $1,000 each year, and that’s not even counting the 2 percent cash back I get through my executive membership,” the employee added.

6. The concierge service
Costco offers a free concierge service to members who want to make a large purchase, such as a refrigerator or washing machine.
The service also offers members technical support for issues and an extension of the manufacturer’s warranty for two years from the date of purchase on certain items.
7. The hearing center
Most Costco locations offer free hearing tests and have great deals on hearing aids and related accessories, Thatcher revealed.
The service also includes a warranty on your hearing aid, follow-up appointments, cleaning of the device and check-ups.

8. Travel packages and insurance
Costco members also get access to lesser-known benefits, such as exclusive deals on travel packages.
Other offers include a bottled water delivery service and discounts on solar panel installation.
Finally, members can also save money on home and pet insurance through offers from the chain.
