Dodgers star Freddie Freeman and wife Chelsea give heartbreaking update on son Max, 3, after he was rushed to hospital with full body paralysis: ‘Scariest days of our lives’

Los Angeles Dodgers baseman Freddie Freeman and his wife Chelsea provided an update on the condition of their son Maximus after revealing he is in the hospital.

In an earlier Instagram Story, Chelsea shared that Max was rushed to the hospital after experiencing unspecified issues since the All-Star break. She added that Freddie met the family and spent the night in the emergency room after a game against the San Francisco Giants.

On Thursday, the couple jointly posted a photo of Max with a lengthy update on his health and recovery. They also revealed the diagnosis and urged their followers to keep them in their prayers.

“Last Friday Max deteriorated rapidly and became completely paralyzed,” they wrote. “We are very happy that we were able to get him to the hospital in time so they could strengthen his lungs.”

‘Freddie was in Houston at the time and rushed to catch the first flight back home. After much testing, Max was diagnosed with a severe case of Guillain-BarrĂ© syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that is especially rare in children.’

Guillain-BarrĂ© syndrome (GBS) is caused by an acute bacterial or viral infection and affects the nerves. Symptoms of GBS begin with weakness and tingling in the lower body. As the infection spreads, paralysis can occur – as in Maximus.

The condition affects fewer than 20,000 cases per year in the United States and can be cured with blood treatments.

“These have been the hardest and scariest days of our lives. Maximus is such a special boy and he has fought SO hard,” they added. “This will be a journey of recovery but we are confident he will make a full recovery. We are overwhelmed by his improvements over the last 48 hours.”

“Maximus was taken off his breathing tube and off the ventilator yesterday, which is a huge victory for us. We believe in the power of prayer and we have witnessed a miracle in his recovery.”
