Greg Rutherford’s bout of bad luck continues as he is blighted by food poisoning at the Paris Olympics – after tearing his stomach open and suffering with whooping cough

Greg Rutherford has revealed that his first day at the Paris Olympics was ruined by severe food poisoning.

The 37-year-old track star told how he recorded an episode of the podcast Inside Track with Sanya Richi Ross and immediately went to bed afterwards.

While filming himself in his hotel room, Greg said, “Hi everyone. I thought I’d give you a little update. I just recorded the first pod with Sonya, really fun.

‘But I had food poisoning last night. I’m in a terrible state and I haven’t felt this sick in a long time.

‘I was throwing up, like I had to throw up violently, not being able to really have an in-depth conversation with anyone.

‘Day one in Paris I was lying in bed, got up to tape the first show, and now I’m back in bed before we tape another show in two hours. God, food poisoning is horrible.’

The retired athlete has been struggling with bad luck since taking part in the ITV show Dancing On Ice. He had to undergo surgery after tearing his stomach open while skating and was later diagnosed with whooping cough.

The latest setback he suffered came after he suffered a “terrifying” and “harrowing” experience last month when a skylight in his home exploded.

The Olympian spoke about the aftermath of the terrifying incident, showing the dangerous shards of glass strewn across his living room.

He admitted he was still “shaking” after the window suddenly shattered, just moments after his children had crouched underneath it, and expressed great shock and relief that no one was hurt.

As he filmed the shards of glass strewn across the couch and floor, he explained: ‘One of the most terrifying experiences ever: one of our skylights up here just exploded.

“I was literally just standing in the kitchen looking at the TV on the wall, and it just went – boom! And there was glass everywhere.”

Greg spoke of his eldest son Milo’s good fortune to escape, saying: ‘I’m not joking, two minutes ago Milo was down here doing schoolwork and I said, “It’s a beautiful day, get on deck mate.”

‘Luckily I did, because otherwise I can’t imagine what would have happened.’

Greg turned up to show the light above and mused, ‘I have no idea if it’s the sun that warmed it up, and it happened, or if something like that happens. I can’t tell you how terrifying…’

He then explained how precarious he had been: ‘I’ve been going in and out all the time because I wanted to clean up today. I’ve walked past here 50 times in the last half hour.’

A shocked Greg concluded: ‘I don’t know. What a horrible event.’

He then posted a close-up photo of the couch his children had been sitting on moments before, showing that the couch was now covered in sharp shards of glass.

Greg captioned the creepy photo: ‘The kids were just sitting here. Can’t stop shaking!’

The father-of-three also recently broke his phone while recovering from a severe bout of whooping cough, causing him to miss the TV BAFTAs.

His fiancée Susie then shared that their beloved dog Gus had terminal cancer and that the family wanted to take the opportunity to enjoy their last moments with him.

Greg previously revealed that he and his family were going through a ‘difficult time’ following his painful injury during the Dancing On Ice show earlier this year.

He was forced to pull out of the final of the ITV show after suffering an injury during rehearsals, later revealing that he had torn his abdominal muscles.

After going through a tough few weeks as a family due to the injury, he took to his Instagram Stories to confess: ‘We are having a great time as a family at the moment, so I am cooking through it. Thanks for all your good wishes.’

This comes after Greg recently spoke about his painful scar and ‘crazy swelling’ following his abdominal surgery.

He shared a few candid snaps and wrote: ‘A little stomach update… I’m almost 4 weeks post op now and feeling much better.

‘I can move without feeling any pain and the wound is now closed and healed. Photo 2 shows the crazy swelling I had at first.

“I can’t really flex my abs yet, but I’ll get there. I’ve also gained a lot of weight since the surgery, so as soon as I’m ready, I’ll start working out to get back in shape… maybe even get back on the skates.”

Greg only revealed what a ‘horrible’ injury he had on Dancing On Ice when he went into hospital for surgery.

The athlete said he “basically gave himself a C-section” when he tried to skate through professional cyclist Colin Grafton’s legs during rehearsals.

He told fans: ‘Today is the day of the surgery. A lot of people have been asking “what happened?”

‘I was quite busy and just recovering from the injury I had before the surgery, so I haven’t been able to talk about it yet.

‘Short story, I jumped through Colin’s legs and tore all my abs and got a hernia. So I effectively gave myself a c-section.

“So yeah, it was excruciatingly painful. I have to have surgery today and then I’ll be back on my feet. It was very painful, pretty awful.”

The Olympian was set to compete against Ryan Thomas, Adele Roberts and Miles Nazaire for the trophy.

Ryan skated to victory and was crowned winner of Dancing On Ice 2024 during the live final together with his pro partner Amani Fancy.

Greg, meanwhile, shared a video of himself and Vanessa James performing the bolero, lamenting missing the final and feeling “a bit sad”.

He wrote: ‘Something I really wanted to do… #Bolero It’s almost 36 hours since the injury and I’m watching the videos of what could have been. It’s bloody hard to process right now because I know we could have shown something exciting and new with our last performances.

‘Of course the Bolero is not a given and I will post our showcase at some point too… I haven’t shown the ending yet because I am determined to perform it with Vanessa one day for everyone to see.

“I’m really proud of what we’ve accomplished with the show. This take was from Saturday morning and we were marking for the double twist… the whole program was really beautiful. I’m a little sad at the moment.”
