India’s coal production rose 6.69 percent year-on-year to 74.07 million tonnes (MT) in July, the government said on Thursday.

The country’s coal production stood at 69.42 tonnes in the corresponding month of the previous fiscal year, the Coal Ministry said in a statement.

Cumulative coal distribution saw a significant increase in July 2024, reaching 79.54 tons, compared with 76.05 tons in July 2023. This represents a growth rate of 4.58 percent.

In a separate statement, the ministry said allocation orders have been issued for 10 strategically important coal mines, marking significant progress in the country’s coal production capacity.

The initiative, which includes one fully explored and nine partially explored mines, is expected to improve energy security and boost economic growth in the states of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh, the report said.

Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy urged the successful bidders to focus on increasing coal production and reducing imports.
