Nuno Espirito Santo faces an uphill battle to secure a dream return to Wolves, with the club turning to other goals.
The Portuguese, one of the most successful managers in the club’s history, was keen to return to Molineux, despite being sacked at the end of the 2020-21 season.
Sportsmail reported on Thursday that Nuno was open to an emotional comeback after putting Wolves down in his first stint in the Premier League and leading them to the Europa League quarter-finals in 2020.

But Wolves have always been cautious about bringing Nuno back and while they haven’t ruled out a move completely, the club is keen to assess candidates who don’t belong to Jorge Mendes’ mighty Gestifute agency. It is now believed that Wolves’ new manager will come from outside the Gestifute stable rather than from inside, with an appointment possible early next week.

Both Nuno and his successor, Bruno Lage, are clients of Gestifute, as well as several members of the Wolves team. When Lage was sacked earlier this month, Wolves turned to another Mendes man, Julen Lopetegui, for a second time, but the Spaniard turned them down again.
Almost two weeks ago, Lage was sacked, leading to unrest among supporters that a permanent replacement has not yet been found. But after Lopetegui rejected Wolves, Chairman Jeff Shi was eager to review a range of candidates.
The new man will have a heavy task on his hands. Prior to Saturday’s clash with Nottingham Forest, Wolves were in the bottom three with veteran Diego Costa as the only suitable striker.
