A teenage girl who brandished a 10-inch kitchen knife during a fierce fight in a school cafeteria has been arrested, police said.

The 14-year-old was detained in Maryland after allegedly using the weapon during a wild luncheon at Thomas Johnson High School in Frederick, Maryland.

Footage taken by shocked bystanders shows the girl walking “threateningly” toward another person before Dustin Turner, the school’s resource officer deputy 1st grade, intervened.

The knife is then dropped to the floor and the girl is pinned down as students flee the room in panic, the video shows.

She was arrested and taken to a police station.

No one was injured in the ugly scenes, but a heavy police presence remained at the school.

Mr Turner was praised for “quickly de-escalating a situation that could have resulted in injury and/or death.”

The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office initially said the student attempted to stab several people before it was downplayed as an “isolated incident between two students in the cafeteria.”

But they’ve since released footage of the incident because it was “so blatant that the public had a right and a need to know,” Sheriff Chuck Jenkins said.

He told Morning News Express on WFMD: “I wanted the public to see how the resource officer who was there reacted so instinctively and effectively with minimal use of force to a situation that could have been fatal.

“The public needs to see this because we are always blamed by law enforcement for not de-escalating situations.

“If this wasn’t a classic, better-than-textbook example of how to intervene and use a minimum of force to bring the situation under control, there is none.”

The teen has been charged as a minor with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, resisting arrest, disrupting school activities, having a dangerous weapon on school grounds and recklessly endangering.
