Rory McIlroy made a hilarious comeback this week for a group of American golf fans who playfully abused the golfer during a round at St. Andrews.
The Northern Irishman played on the Old Course as part of his preparations for his quest for golf gold at the Paris Olympics.
Hordes of fans gathered around the 18th green as McIlroy completed his round on Monday, with many showering tributes on the 35-year-old player.
“Rory, New York loves you!” one shouted, prompting others to shout “Miami, Florida!” and “The Bronx, baby, the Bronx!”
McIlroy enjoyed the accolades and responded by cupping his hands over his mouth and shouting back his own message.

“You won’t like us next year!” said the Northern Irishman, referring to the 2025 Ryder Cup, which will be held at Bethpage Black, near New York City.
McIlroy will be part of the European team that wants to defend the Ryder Cup next year. His joke was received with cheers and laughter from the American fans.
The 35-year-old, who will represent the Irish team at the Olympic Games at Le Golf National in Paris alongside Shane Lowry, helped Europe beat the US in Rome last year.
McIlroy became involved in a brawl with Patrick Cantlay’s caddie, Joe LaCava, which later left the Northern Irishman restrained in the car park.
