Young doctor leaders agree to 22.3% salary deal over two years
Young doctor leaders have reached a new pay deal with the government that will see their salaries increase by 22.3% over the next two years.
The historic agreement is the result of 44 days of strikes since the first strikes by young doctors in March 2023, when they demanded a 35% pay increase.
Since December 2022, there has been no medical work carried out on the NHS, resulting in the postponement of 1.5 million appointments, procedures and operations, at an estimated cost of over £3 billion.
The British Medical Association (BMA) Young Doctors Committee has accepted an offer of an average pay rise of 22.3% over the years 2023/24 and 2024/25, the Guardian understands.
At a meeting on Saturday, the committee agreed to put the offer to its members, a source said. If accepted, it would end the strike. Tens of thousands of members will now vote on the deal.
