Fantastic Four: First Steps features Galactus, the Fantasticar in SDCC’s Hall H

The cast of Marvel Studios’ Fantastic four entered the Hall H stage San Diego Comic-Con today to preview the MCU’s first Fantastic Four film, now known as The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Cast members Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/The Human Torch) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm/The Thing) — along with director Matt Shakman — were on hand to treat audiences to teasers for the film and new footage.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed in June that the film would be a period film and possibly set in an alternate universe. The Hall H panel further confirmed that, whatever universe it is, First steps is set in the 1960s. “For me, the ’60s is all about optimism,” Shakman said, as the cast emphasized the family atmosphere of making a film about Marvel Comics’ so-called First Family.

The audience in Hall H was treated to an inflatable replica of Fantasticar from the film, as well as a clip of Reed Richards, in a video for the Future Foundation, a think tank of superhero futurists founded by Richards that is often woven into Fantastic Four lore. The clip ended with Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds, peering through the windows of the Baxter Building, the FF’s headquarters, a truly disgusting development.

Shakman, Pascal, Kirby, Quinn and Moss-Bachrach left the stage at the end of the panel, probably to get some rest, because The Fantastic Four: First Steps will begin filming soon — Tuesday, the panel confirmed. The four actors will be joined by Julia Garner (Ozark) as Shalla-Bal (probably the Silver Surfer) and Paul Walter Hauser (Richard Juwel), John Malkovich (With air), and Natasha Lyonne (Poker face) in unknown roles.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps will hit theaters on July 25, 2025.
