How European royals are offering an example with their children to adapt to the spotlight

Growing up famous is never a walk in the park, and European royals are taking steps to prepare their children for the spotlight that comes with the crown in what could be a blueprint for the Prince and Princess of Wales, royal experts have said.

With Prince George, nine, coming second in line to the throne last month, Prince William and Kate Middleton may be tempted to watch other royal families raise their children and prepare them for life as royals.

Queen Letizia of Spain, 50, took her teenage daughters on royal engagements to guide them through their first steps as royals, and was seen with her youngest daughter, Princess Sofia, 15, in Madrid earlier this week.

Meanwhile, Princess Estelle of Sweden, 10, the daughter of Crown Princess Victoria, took center stage during the Dutch royal visit this week, receiving a warm hug from her godfather, King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands.

Speaking to FEMAIL, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams asked whether formal public appearances are becoming routine for George and his younger siblings, Princess Charlotte, seven, and Prince Louis, four.

“The way the public follows the young royal family is of course through public appearances.

“Obviously, their privacy should always come first and William and Catherine have made sure we’ve limited them as much as possible when we see them, while there’s always global interest.

“If they show up, they can steal the show, like Louis did during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The important issue here is how this is handled,” he added.

The commentator went on to say that it has always been paramount to Prince William to put his family first.

“William has always put his family first and given them space, first in Anglesey, then Anmer Hall and now Adelaide Cottage on Windsor Estate, where all three of their children attend the same school and are given privacy that they didn’t have when them at Kensington Palace,” he added.

Richard also discussed Queen Margrethe II of Denmark’s controversial decision to remove the princely titles from her second son’s children earlier this month.

Recently it became known that the children of Prince Joachim, who currently lives in France, Felix, Nikolai, Athena and Henrik, will not be called “Prince and Princess”, but will be Counts and Countesses.

The royal expert said: “Queen Margrethe’s ill-timed removal of the titles of her second son Joachim’s children, following a similar action by King Carl Gustav in Sweden in 2019, was a rare moment of public disharmony.

However, the commentator asked if Sweden is setting the tone for the future with Princess Estelle, who welcomed the Dutch royal family to Stockholm this week with her parents and grandparents.

He added that we may see more of George and Charlotte in the coming years as they take on more assignments.

‘Is it possible that George will do the same in a few years? I suspect not for a while, but who knows,’ he said.

“After all, George once entertained President Obama in his bathrobe when he was almost three and made a lifelong friend,” he added.

‘Copies of the bathrobe were also sold out, showing how young he was as a fashion icon!’

When it comes to Princess Charlotte, the only daughter of the Prince and Princess of Wales, the way Letizia of Spain raises her youngest daughter Sofia, the fifteen-year-old, is perhaps a good example to follow.

“Infanta Sofia showed up with her parents on the Spanish National Day and made quite an impression when she wore a Carolina Herrera dress,” he said.

But the expert tempered that it could be a few years before Charlotte is released in this capacity because “she is much younger.”

Meanwhile, Nigel Cawthorne, author of Prince Andrew, Maxwell, Epstein and the Palace, suggested that the Prince and Princess of Wales might be tempted to follow Princess Diana’s lead.

“It was William’s mother Diana who revolutionized the way children would be treated in the British royal family,” he said.

“As Princess of Wales, she abolished the army of servants and nannies who raised Charles in a bubble away from his parents, and treated her boys as any family in Britain would,” he added.

“Without a doubt the best approach for Kate and William is to think, ‘What would Diana do?'”
