Harvey Weinstein hospitalized with COVID-19 and pneumonia

NEW YORK — Former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein has been transferred from a New York City jail to a hospital to be treated for several health conditions, including COVID-19 and pneumonia in both lungs, his representatives said Thursday.

Weinstein, who is awaiting trial in New York on rape and sexual assault charges, was transferred from the Rikers Island jail complex to a locked ward at Bellevue Hospital. Other conditions requiring treatment included diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis and fluid on his heart and lungs, according to a statement from Weinstein’s publicist, who attributed the health information to Craig Rothfeld, Weinstein’s prison consultant.

“We continue to express our gratitude to the officers, doctors and nurses” at the city’s jails and public hospitals “who ensured that Mr. Weinstein was immediately transferred to the detention center at Bellevue Hospital,” publicist Juda Engelmayer said.

Weinstein has been in Bellevue at least once before, after first being brought to New York City for court proceedings related to his rape case.

Weinstein, 72, was found guilty of rape and sexual assault in 2020. conviction was overturned by professional judges who found that jurors should not have heard testimony from women who had accused the film producer of misconduct, but whose allegations were not part of the case.

A new process has been started planned for November.

Although his conviction was overturned, Weinstein remains in prison, in part because he was sentenced to 16 years in prison in California in 2022 in a Los Angeles rape case.

Weinstein denies raping or sexually assaulting anyone.

During a recent court hearing, Weinstein’s lawyers said his health was poor and requested that he be transferred from jail to the hospital.
