Heroscape tiles, the platonic ideal of tabletop terrain, are finally back on the market

Heroic landscapethe beloved miniatures wargame, is finally back on the market. Polygon had the chance to review the new Heroscape: Age of Annihilation Masterset and we’re happy to report that the reboot is looking pretty solid, even after its rocky 2022 reveal. Even better is the fact that the glorious, rugged terrain will soon be available for everyone to enjoy once again.

First published in 2004, Heroic landscape is an asymmetric wargame that tells the story of multiple warring factions coming together from across the weird and evil multiverse. But the game’s most enduring legacy was its terrain, a clever system of interlocking plastic tiles that could be easily and securely stacked on the tabletop, creating 3D peaks, valleys, and river crossings with ease. After a failed Hasbro crowdfunding attempt, the franchise was licensed by Renegade Game Studio and is now available for pre-order . The new tiles are nearly identical to the old ones, meaning they’re fully compatible with legacy terrain sets.

Fans have been hoarding these tiles for years, devouring auction lots by the hex load to use in all sorts of systems. They’re great for Dungeons and Dragons And Boy Scoutwhere you can use them for normal combat or to abstract overland travel. They are useful for almost any other type of roleplaying game, but especially for games like Combat technique and other more traditional wargames that use hexes. While they have become hard to find since the original game went out of print, this reboot pretty much ensures that these tiles will remain in circulation for a new generation of gamers to enjoy.

The basic version of the Heroic landscape: Age of Annihilation master set applies to $125 and comes with a total of 74 terrain pieces. For the hardcore, that’s 330 hexes of play space, in addition to the rest of the game. You’ll be hard-pressed to find that much terrain on an auction site for much less. Expect the product to ship soon.
