Man United urged to be ‘ruthless’ in selling Harry Maguire this summer by club legend Dwight Yorke, with a SHOCK move to Premier League rival proposed

  • Harry Maguire played 22 Premier League games for United last season
  • The Red Devils have strengthened their defense with the arrival of youngster Yoro
  • The 31-year-old came close to leaving the club for West Ham last summer

Manchester United have been under pressure to sell Harry Maguire this summer amid rumours that he is available, with talk of a sensational move to Chelsea.

Erik ten Hag’s team have already spent £88million on the signings of Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro this summer.

The big spending may not be over yet, with the likes of Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui linked with a move to Old Trafford.

And the Red Devils are reportedly prepared to part with as many as seven players to raise funds for their future signings. According to ESPN, Maguire is one of them and United legend Dwight Yorke believes the club should be “ruthless” in letting him go.

‘Harry Maguire could see out the last year of his contract and know he’ll have to play at some point because of injuries, but United really need to be ruthless and get rid of him,’ he told Premier League Betting.

‘They’ve got Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and maybe Leny Yoro, but Harry Maguire is in a position where he doesn’t have to go anywhere if he doesn’t want to.

‘The chance to get rid of him has passed, because he wanted to play in the 2024 European Championship so badly and he would do anything to be able to play.

“That was the moment to move him so he could play football regularly. So that opportunity passed and he’s still there.”

In addition to Maguire, Scott McTominay, Antony and Jadon Sancho are reportedly available if their valuations are met. Victor Lindelof, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Christian Eriksen all have one year left on their contracts, so could also be in line for axing.

The centre-back joined United from Leicester in 2019 and was appointed club captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in January 2020, but Erik ten Hag decided to strip him of the captaincy.

After losing his captaincy, being booed by his own fans and being touted at West Ham in the summer, it looked like his time at Old Trafford was coming to an end after Ten Hag demoted him to a bit-part role.

However, the England international, who missed Euro 2024 due to injury, kept his advice and re-emerged as a key player towards the end of last season.

It is no longer a matter of whether Maguire plays, but who plays alongside him.

Maguire said earlier about his return to form: ‘I was prepared to stay and fight for my place.

“I really enjoy my football and I really enjoy playing for this club. I played a few games last year and I thought I did really well. I just didn’t play as much as I would have liked.

‘I had to bide my time and be patient, but I’ve been sick and injured twice, so I never had the rhythm and the run of games where I could prove myself to the manager. I have that now.’

Despite the resurgence, Yorke remains adamant that the defender should be sacked, even suggesting a surprise destination should his old club follow his advice.

‘Maguire has shown that he can still play at the highest level and top clubs like Chelsea, who are rebuilding, could take a chance on Maguire.

‘He can clearly still play at that level and a fresh start might just give him that injection to really perform at that top level for another year or two. So you never know.’
