Westfield Miranda: ‘Explosion’ rocks Sydney shopping centre

Terrified shoppers were forced to run for their lives after a ‘small’ explosion in the toilets of one of Sydney’s busiest shopping centres.

Police were called to Westfield Miranda in the city’s south end at around 2pm on Wednesday after reports of a man throwing bottles into a first-floor toilet.

The man is said to have had bottles full of chemicals with him and thrown them into the toilet until one exploded.

Police have seized several bottles for forensic examination.

A 21-year-old was arrested nearby and taken to Sutherland Police Station, where he is assisting with enquiries. No charges have been laid.
