Bill Maher ridicules claims God saved Trump’s life – and reveals why he thinks former president survived assassination attempt

Bill Maher has ridiculed the claim that God saved Donald Trump’s life during an assassination attempt at a political rally.

The comedian slammed those who used last week’s events as evidence that the presidential candidate has the backing of a higher power.

He accused Republicans of engaging in an “orgy of magical thinking” by suggesting that Trump’s survival was due to divine intervention.

Instead, he argued that the narrow escape was purely down to luck and warned against sanctifying Trump as a religious figure.

“Donald Trump, even if you like him, is powerful enough as a former president, a likely future president and, frankly, a cult leader. America doesn’t need a demigod,” Maher said on his HBO show.

From the pharaohs to Julius Caesar and Hirohito, many cultures have tried it: an earthly being who is simultaneously divine or at least godlike, and it never works out well.

“We live in the 21st century. Enough of interpreting any random sign as a DM from heaven.”

His comments came after several conservatives shared images of Trump as an angel or saved by the hand of God.

This included Republican Congressman Mike Collins who said, “God spared Ronald Regan for a reason. God spared Donald Trump for a reason. God doesn’t miss.”

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon said Trump “wears the armor of God.”

While pro-MAGA boxer Jake Paul wrote on Twitter, “When you try to kill God’s angels and saviors you only make them bigger.”

Conservatives were quick to suggest that Trump survived thanks to divine intervention

But Maher denounced the hypocritical idea that God saved Trump but allowed others like Martin Luther King, JFK and John Lennon to die.

“Look, the son of a bitch who shot Trump was a coward, unpatriotic, selfish, mean, weak, and he should rot in hell. But thinking that God protects your heroes and not mine, that’s not cool either,” Maher added.

“Trump didn’t survive because of divine intervention, he survived because a virgin couldn’t hit the fattest president since Taft,” Maher said of shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks.

“Make no mistake, I’m glad he didn’t. But Trump is alive because he’s the luckiest son of a bitch who ever lived.”

Trump was speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania when Crooks, 20, opened fire on Saturday.

The bullet hit him in the ear, but also hit Corey Comperatore who was present and died while protecting himself his young daughter and wife by the gunfire.

Crooks was then shot and killed by a sniper shortly after he began shooting. Two other people were seriously injured in the incident.

Trump posted a statement about the shooting on his Truth Social page, expressing his condolences to the victims.

“It is unbelievable that something like this could happen in our country. There is no information at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear,” the former president said.

“I knew right away something was wrong because I heard a whooshing sound, shots, and I immediately felt the bullet rip through my skin. There was a lot of blood loss, so that’s when I realized what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
