The vacancy for the new England national coach calls for a candidate who can win a major tournament.
The Football Association (FA) is looking for the first new manager of the men’s national team since 2016. Gareth Southgate has stepped down as national coach after his team lost the final of Euro 2024 to Spain.
Southgate took charge in 2016 and led his team to two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final, but failed to win their first major trophy since 1966.
The English Football Association (FA) are said to have already identified a number of candidates to take over the role, but an advert has now been shared inviting coaches to apply for the position of the Three Lions’ new boss.
The ad lists three main goals. Potential candidates are immediately told that they must lead the team to victory in a major tournament.

The first bullet point explaining the role reads: ‘Lead and develop the England senior team to win a major tournament and be consistently ranked as one of the best teams in the world.
The second reads: ‘Provide inspirational leadership to a world-class, multi-disciplinary technical team based in St George’s Park/
The third and final one is: ‘Develop and maintain strong relationships with clubs that employ qualified English players.’
England now sit fourth in the FIFA rankings after the tournament, behind Argentina, France and Spain. It is a rise of one from fifth place before the competition started in Germany.
However, they are back to square one in their fight for a major title, with World Cup qualification starting soon after their loss at the European Championships.
Elsewhere in the job advert it states that the successful candidate must hold a UEFA Pro Licence and be ‘an exceptional leader who understands and enjoys the international football world’.
It is also claimed that the successful candidate will be ‘comfortable’ under ‘intense public scrutiny’ as Southgate could face criticism over his team’s performance in Germany.
Other requirements include that the candidate has ‘experience in successfully identifying, managing and developing English-speaking qualified players’ and ‘a track record of creating a high-performance team culture and environment with a positive team spirit’.

At the bottom of the advert it states that the FA adheres to the following values: ‘aim high’, ‘deliver together’ and ’embrace differences’.
It also states that the FA ‘promotes equality, diversity and inclusion’ and that anyone who meets the criteria can apply.
England are understood to have a temporary solution ready for the September internationals should a candidate not be definitively appointed by then.
Well-known actors such as Lee Carsley, Ange Postecoglou, Graham Potter and Eddie Howe have all been linked with the role.
