Brett Ratten is said to be leaving St Kilda just months after signing a new contract with the AFL club.
According to AFL.com.au, Saints’ heads came to the decision after a review of the club’s football activities, which put the team’s achievements in the spotlight.
Ratten signed a two-year extension in July, putting him through to 2024, but a poor end to the season in which they failed to reach the final for the second year in a row forced the club to hand.
“As the leader of our men’s program, Brett has received significant buy-in from his fellow coaches, staff and players,” Saints chairman Andrew Bassat said after Ratten signed his new deal on July 8.
“In addition to his strong football IQ, our players appreciate his ability to develop strong relationships, which he uses as a foundation to challenge each individual to get better and fulfill their role for the team.
“This balance and ability to unite his coaches, players and staff in a relentless quest for excellence makes Brett the best person to lead us into our much-anticipated second premiership.”
The Saints sat fourth in round 11 this season, with an 8-3 record, but have since lost eight of their last 11 games to miss the final altogether.
They were also quiet in the trading period, missing top target Jordan De Goey while only adding free agent Zaine Cordy. They also gave up Ben Long for pick 32.
“I’m just concerned that they’re recruiting to be competitive or to make it to finals, not necessarily to win a premiership,” David King said of the Saints’ activities.
“I’ve been concerned about this list for a long time and St Kilda fans think I’m cheating them.
‘They have to be careful that they don’t become Australia’s leading capital.’
