Jeremy Finlayson will miss the remainder of the 2024 AFL season after suffering a serious injury last week.

The Port Adelaide star suffered a knock during the Power’s defeat to Gold Coast on Sunday, but played out the match despite pain in his sternum.

Scans on Monday showed a small tear in his spleen.

Fortunately, the 28-year-old attacker does not need surgery for the injury, but the club does say that he ‘needs a long period of rest and recovery.’

“He had a small but stable tear in his spleen,” Port assistant coach Tyson Goldsack said.

‘He didn’t really show anything during the match, he felt some muscle pain, but in general.

‘But he kept playing, it was only after the game that he reported that he was in quite a bit of pain and the doctors sent him for a scan and that was confirmed.’

Finlayson’s contract expires at the end of the season and Goldsack has insisted the club will continue to support him.

“We’re just going to make sure he recovers the way he needs to,” he said.

“His health is priority number one.”

The bad news for Finlayson comes after his brave wife Kellie opened up about her battle with cancer.

Kellie, 28, has been battling bowel and lung cancer since they were diagnosed in November 2021 following the birth of their child Sophia.

After it was announced that her original diagnosis had been changed from stage 3 to stage 4, surgery, chemotherapy and other treatments followed.

Earlier this month, the social media influencer documented her complex journey on Instagram, and it’s been a source of inspiration for many.

“Today marks two years since I woke up in intensive care after spending hours on the operating table,” she posted.

‘Today I already gave a Workplace Program, had a massage and now I’m sitting in the waiting room of the physiotherapist for a problem that has nothing to do with it… [so] wild.

I am also recovering from a cold [go little immune system] and just visited this month’s Scanxiety check-in.’
