‘Eager to leave’ Jude Bellingham told to go on holiday, Harry Kane is handed a BRUTAL rating… and Spain are ‘SUPER CHAMPIONS’ after Wimbledon and Euros double: European press revel in England’s heartache

According to L’Equipe, Jude Bellingham was a ‘symbol’ of England’s frustration during their Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain, with Harry Kane receiving a low rating.

Goals from Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzabal ensured the Three Lions suffered a painful defeat in Berlin last night and extended their trophy drought to a record 60 years.

Cole Palmer had levelled the scores shortly after coming on as a second-half substitute, but Oyarzabal fired home a Marc Cucurella cross from close range to hand Gareth Southgate’s side another defeat in the European Championship final.

The foreign press was divided afterwards about the way England performed.

French outlet L’Equipe Bellingham, who played much of the game on the left flank to free up Phil Foden, summed up his country’s woes well, claiming the superstar is ‘keen’ to put both the result and the tournament behind him.

They have also tipped that the midfielder is going on holiday ‘frustrated’.

Striker Kane was taken off after an hour of play after yet another ineffective performance and replaced by semi-final hero Ollie Watkins. L’Equipe, known for their strict ratings, also put him in the spotlight, giving him a meagre 3/10.

‘The Bayern Munich player was clearly tired and made some poor decisions. He missed several passes that made his team’s attacks impossible, was rightly booked for an avoidable foul on Fabian Ruiz and was short of a cross,’ they wrote.

‘The captain was logically replaced by Watkins in the 61st minute.’

Kyle Walker, Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo also came in for criticism, with the trio given a 4, while the highest English rating, a 6, was given to five of Southgate’s players: Jordan Pickford, John Stones, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Bellingham.

It is no surprise that Spanish front pages toasted the victory with jubilation.

Marca posted a large photo of the trophy lift across the entire screen, with the headline: ‘The Invincible Armada’, depicted in a striking yellow colour.

AS adopted a similar design with a photo of the Spanish players, coaching staff, King Felipe and Infanta Sofia celebrating on the podium stretched across both pages. Their large headline roughly translates as: ‘Spain in glory’.

Sport used its front page to celebrate the achievements of both its football team and Carlos Alcaraz, who yesterday defended his Wimbledon title by beating Novak Djokovic in three sets. Alcaraz was hailed as ‘super champions’.

Mundo Deportivo similarly split the page in two, with the Spanish trophy on the top half and a photo of Alcaraz kissing his Wimbledon trophy on the bottom half.

“Champions!” was their simple headline.

England manager Southgate indicated that he did not want to think about his future so soon after the final, but that he did want to hold discussions to make a decision.

“This is not the time to talk about that,” he said after the game. “I need to talk to the right people and give myself some time.

“To get to another final… it was a privilege to have the opportunity. But to fall short at this point is difficult.”
