Bayern Munich have announced that Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha has signed a contract until 2028.

The Portugal international, who made 33 appearances for Marco Silva’s men in the Premier League last season, has made the switch to the Bundesliga almost a year after his transfer to the German giants fell through on the final day.

The 29-year-old joined the West London club from Sporting Lisbon in 2022 and will now play under new Bayern manager Vincent Kompany.

Kompany continues to scout Premier League clubs after signing Michael Olise from Crystal Palace earlier this month.

Palhinha joins a list of high-profile departures from Craven Cottage this summer, along with Tosin Adarabioyo and Bobby De Cordova-Reid who left the club on free transfers, while the future of Willian, whose contract is expiring, remains uncertain.

Defensive midfielder Palhinha played for Portugal at Euro 2024, but the Portuguese team were knocked out on penalties by France in the quarter-finals.

This is the second summer in a row that Fulham have received a large fee for a top player, with Aleksandar Mitrovic leaving for Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal last August.

Silva still has Tom Cairney and Harrison Reed at his disposal to replace Palhinha, but could look to the market for replacements for the Cottagers’ season opener against Manchester United at Old Trafford on August 16.
