The trailer for the final season of Umbrella Academy is rightly a blast from MCR’s The End.
The Umbrella Academy represents the end of the world — again!
That’s basically the norm for the seven Hargreeves siblings, who have narrowly escaped the end of the world for three seasons. But this time, it’s the last time, really, as this is the final season of the Netflix series. And, fittingly enough, the new trailer sets the stakes high “The End” by My Chemical Romance. (If you didn’t know, The Umbrella Academy (comics were originally written by MCR frontman Gerard Way).
It is actually the First time an MCR song has been used on the show. There were songs by Gerard Way on the soundtrack, but showrunner Steve Blackman seems to prefer quirky needle drops like The Backstreet Boys’ “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back),” They Might Be Giants’ “Istanbul” and Jeremy Renner’s cover of “House of the Rising Sun.”
But what better way to end The Umbrella Academy Then with “The End.”, a song that sounds appropriately angsty. Usually, the show’s song choices are eccentric and unexpectedly perfect (like the Swedish version of “Hello” that plays during a Viking funeral in Season 2, Episode 5). But “The End.” is a more literal interpretation, especially since the lyrics are all about a “tragic affair” — perhaps Blackman is poking fun at his own tastes so far, or honoring Way’s contributions to the show.
The new trailer gets more specific about the nature of this particular end of the world: this time around, Ben (Justin H. Min) is the loose canon who accidentally ends the world. The siblings realize that none of them remember exactly how he died… and that could be the key to saving the world.
The Umbrella Academy returns for the final time on August 8th. Hopefully the Hargreeves brothers can pull it off and actually save the damn world this time.
