Senator Tim Scott tops our poll of potential vice presidential nominees for Donald Trump as the former president moves closer to making his decision.

Aides have said North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Sen. Marco Rubio and Sen. J.D. Vance are on a shortlist of three as they make his announcement ahead of the Republican Party convention next week.

But our poll of 1,000 likely voters offers more food for thought in the meantime, adding even more names to the mix.

About 13 percent want Scott, the only black Republican in the Senate, on the ballot.

Rubio, a foreign policy expert, is in second place with 12 percent, tied with former neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who served in Trump’s Cabinet for four years.

JL Partners asked 1,000 likely voters who they would like to see as Trump’s VP pick. The results have a margin of error of plus/minus 3.1 points

Vance, a big favorite among Trump’s MAGA base, is polling at just four percent, as is Burgum, who still has little name recognition but reportedly gets along well with the former president.

The top three remains the same when only Republican voters are considered.

Speculation about Trump’s choice reached a fever pitch in late June when the former president declared that he had already made up his mind and that he would most likely attend the first presidential debate in Atlanta, Georgia.

But he and his team have kept their position secret since then, letting the spotlight linger on President Joe Biden’s poor performance and unrest among Democrats over whether he should remain on the ballot at all.

“It could happen any time this week,” Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller said during an appearance on Fox News.

A JL Partners poll of 1,000 likely voters found Trump had increased his lead over Biden by two points to six points after the debate.

Trump is scheduled to hold a rally in Miami on Tuesday, raising questions about whether he is close to announcing one of Florida’s potential candidates as his vice president, specifically Rubio.

But there’s another rally on Saturday in Pennsylvania… near Vance’s home state of Ohio.

According to insiders, we should take nothing for granted when we wonder what Trump will decide.

Each of the three biggest names is being promoted by influential members of the Trump world.

Steve Bannon, former chief strategist for the White House, has quietly positioned Burgum as a reliable candidate who would not overshadow his boss.

Donald Trump Jr. and conservative activist Charlie Kirk promote Vance as the favorite of the grassroots movement.

And pollster Kellyanne Conway argued that Rubio would succeed best if he brought key demographic groups into the Trump coalition.

“As President Trump himself has said, the most important criterion in selecting a vice president is a strong leader who will be a great president for the eight years after his next four-year term ends,” said Brian Hughes, a senior adviser to Trump’s campaign.

“But anyone who says they know who or when President Trump will choose his vice president is lying, unless that person’s name is Donald J. Trump.”
