Gary Neville insists England will LOSE if Gareth Southgate doesn’t make ‘drastic changes to the system and personnel’ ahead of Switzerland clash

Gary Neville is convinced England will lose their quarter-final against Switzerland on Saturday afternoon unless Gareth Southgate makes ‘drastic changes to the system and personnel’.

Southgate has fielded his England team in a 4-2-3-1 formation for each of the first four games at Euro 2024, but it is possible he could switch up his system for the next match.

Neville fears Southgate’s current tactics are not sufficient and is urging the England manager – who has used just 13 different starters in Germany, 10 of whom started in all four games – to make changes.

In the second episode of Stick to Football: The Overlap Special, brought to you by Sky BetNeville said: ‘There has been news coming out that there is a feeling there could be a change to three players at the back [for England] and some pretty drastic changes to the system and personnel.

“To be honest, I think it’s necessary. Something drastic is needed because if they play like they’ve been doing, they’re going to get beat. They need to do something that changes the dynamics of the performances.”

Southgate is likely to play a back three on Saturday, but perhaps not by choice. The change has been forced upon him due to the suspension of centre-back Marc Guehi.

Southgate’s side were spotted in a 3-4-3 formation during a training session this week – much to the delight of Ian Wright, who shared his joy at the tactical change during a speech about the overlap.

He said: I think we have a good chance if England play with wingbacks against Switzerland, especially if we can get the left flank to play well.

‘It would be a shame if Bukayo Saka played at left-back because Gareth Southgate didn’t want to bring in a reserve left-back for Luke Shaw, and I said that Saka should play there as a solution to the current problem. Saka said that it’s not a position he wants to play, but he would do it for the team.

‘Ultimately it’s all about getting the left side of the team going. If Luke Shaw is fit now and can start then that’s great, but if Southgate doesn’t find that and he plays Saka in that position then hopefully that will work.

Meanwhile, Keane said England fans should get behind the team and insisted no one would mind if England reached the final by playing “boring football”.

‘What I’m most concerned about is that Southgate hasn’t brought a backup left-back for Luke Shaw, given he’s missed the tournament so far. However, I’m happy we’re still in the tournament and that’s the most important thing.’

Meanwhile, Keane said England fans need to get behind the team and insisted no one would mind if England reached the final by playing ‘boring football’. Speaking about the Overlap, he said: ‘People need to stop moaning about England’s performance because they are still in the tournament and that is the most important thing.

‘Imagine if you played well and you got knocked out of the tournament, the reaction would be worse. England have brilliant attacking players who have pulled the team out of jail and that’s what I thought would happen before the tournament.

‘It’s been a while since you thought England were consistently good, but that struggle is fine when you have match-winning players in your team. If England get to the semi-final or the final and play badly, no one will complain.
