A male student was taken to hospital with upper body burns after a fuel canister exploded at a regional high school in Victoria.
The teenager from Bairnsdale Secondary College, in northeastern Victoria, was airlifted 280km to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne at around 11:20 am on Wednesday.
His condition is serious but stable.
A spokeswoman for the Country Fire Authority said three fire units were on the scene, along with police, Worksafe officers and paramedics.
A male student with severe upper body burns was taken to hospital in an explosion at Bairnsdale Secondary College on Wednesday morning.
The boy was near a fuel canister in the school when it exploded, causing serious injuries.
The site was cleared by emergency services at 11:45 a.m.
A statement released by the school in the afternoon said: “There was an incident at the school this morning where a student was taken to hospital for his injuries.
‘The incident was quickly brought under control, there is no danger to students or staff and classes will continue as usual.’
