Weekend weather: Rain bomb is about to strike Australia, along with a polar blast – here’s what’s in store for your city
Australians living in major capital cities have been warned to bundle up again as more cold, rain and wind await.
South-eastern Australia is about to be hit by super-cooled air from Antarctica, sending thermometers plummeting.
As the cold air hits a northwest cloud band, it will bring rain to widespread areas.
Sky News Weather meteorologist Rob Sharpe said the cold front would move across the south-east of the country.
“Melbourne looks windy then wet again,” he said on Friday.
Melbourne’s overnight temperatures will drop mainly on Sunday and Monday evening, with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting they will drop to 6 degrees Celsius with northerly winds of 35 to 50 km/h.
Below-freezing temperatures are expected in Canberra tonight and frost is expected on Monday morning.
Then it’s NSW’s turn to shiver, after enjoying a warm 20C on Saturday, quickly followed by a three to four degree drop.
A front of Antarctic cold will cause people in southeastern Australia to shiver this weekend
During the day, a light wind from the south to southwest is expected, which will become even weaker in the evening.
“The cold behind that rain band will then move across New South Wales,” Sharpe said.
‘Sydney will have even wetter weather on Sunday.’
However, the cold is good news for skiers.
“We’ve got colder weather coming. We’re probably going to get 20cm of snow at most ski resorts, which will be quite helpful there,” Mr Sharpe said.
There is also a chance of strong winds in the resorts and surrounding areas on Saturday and Sunday.
40 to 80mm of rain is expected in eastern and central Queensland, including the northern Goldfields, Coalfields and Highlands. However, Brisbane and the surrounding region are likely to receive only 5 to 10 mm.
In addition to the cold and sometimes windy conditions, showers are also expected in large parts of Australia over the weekend
The Capricornia coast, the Whitsundays and the coast through the centre of the state can expect a few showers.
Adelaide will also experience the consequences of the cold front. Over the weekend, the minimum temperature will drop to 6 degrees Celsius and 10 to 20 mm of rain is expected.
Meanwhile, Perth is enjoying warmer weather than normal for this time of year, with minimum temperatures dropping below 10 degrees Celsius, while daytime temperatures hover around the 20s Celsius mark.
