Sunrise host Matt ‘Shirvo’ Shirvington reveals the bizarre item he keeps in his car to avoid the wrath of his wife at home

Matt ‘Shirvo’ Shirvington stepped into the shoes of Sunrise host David ‘Kochie’ Koch in 2023.

The former Olympic athlete, 44, took over as co-host alongside Natalie Barr last June.

As he celebrates his one-year anniversary on the beloved breakfast show, Shirvo shared a lesson he learned from his early morning start.

He talked about the time he decided to blend his morning smoothie in the family kitchen at 3 a.m.

“I made that mistake once, and once only… my wife (Jessica) had something to say about it at the time!” he told New Idea.

Now he prepares his smoothie with a blender in his car.

“I make my smoothie with a portable blender in my car before I leave for work,” he revealed.

The smoothie contains spinach, Greek yoghurt, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and beetroot with a dash of cinnamon and coconut water, giving it all its essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals.

Shirvo, 44, recently revealed the grueling schedule that helped him shoot to the top of Network Seven in just a year.

He said he’s gotten tips from co-host Barr on implementing a very strict morning routine.

“I’m trying to do a crash course alongside Nat because there’s a lot I can learn from the lessons she’s learned along the way,” he said 7News.com.au.

Shirvo starts his day at 2:20 am and trains for 30 minutes on his exercise bike at home while the rest of the country is still sleeping.

Shirvo said this is the only way he can maintain aspects of his job that, to his surprise, are very physically demanding.

‘I think I’m a fairly strong and fit person, but even sitting there in that position and understanding that you have to move and react in a certain way, it’s quite physically and even mentally exhausting, so I think that’s a big shock,” he said.

The presenter went on to say that he doesn’t even get a break when the adverts appear for viewers at home because he and 56-year-old Nat work behind the scenes.

As fans of the show watch the latest ads, Shirvo said he and Nat are busy recording “promos, intros and openers, and we’re also talking to the people we’re interviewing.”

By the time he gets home, Shirvo says he’s so exhausted that he has to “take a nap” for half an hour after a big lunch to “get him through the rest of the day.”

Shirvo then retires for the night as he goes to bed early at 7:30 PM.

He shares daughters Sienna, 17, Winter, 15, and son Lincoln, six, with high school sweetheart and now wife Jessica Shirvington.
