Matt Bomer and Nathan Lane to star in Golden Girls-inspired sitcom Mid-Century Modern set in Palm Springs from Ryan Murphy
Nathan Lane and Matt Bomer have signed on for Mid-Century Modern, a modern update of Golden Girls set in Palm Springs from producer Ryan Murphy, on Hulu.
Nathan, 68, will play the Dorothy-esque character created by Bea Arthur, while Matt, 46, will be the ditzy Rose-esque character made beloved by Betty White.
Legendary actress Linda Lanvin, 86, will play Sophia as Nathan’s character’s mother.
Will & Grace creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan developed the series and James Burrow will direct the pilot. Variety reported.
The tagline for the series reads: ‘As chosen family, they prove that no matter how hard things get, there’s always someone around to remind you that it’s better if you get your neck done.’

In the original pilot for the Golden Girls, one of the four housemates was gay
“The series follows three best friends – gay gentlemen of a certain age – who, after an unexpected death, decide to spend their golden years together in Palm Springs, where the richest one lives with his mother and a naked Gen Z housekeeper,” Hulu said in a press release.
‘Bunny, a successful businessman with one foot in retirement, is forever looking for love, but he must first be convinced that he is worth it.
“Like her son, Sybil’s strengths are her weaknesses: wise, caring, and iconoclastic — which sometimes means she’s critical, stifling, and amoral,” the synopsis reads.
“Jerry left the Mormon Church and his marriage in his early 20s after his wife informed him and the rest of the congregation that he was homosexual.
“Jerry is now a modern-day saint in the literal sense of the word and has a pure heart. He is also hard of body and soft of head,” the report concluded.
“Mid-Century Modern stars Nathan Lane as Bunny Schneiderman, Matt Bomer as Jerry Frank and Linda Lavin as Sybil Schneiderman, Bunny’s mother.”
Golden Girls has long been loved by the LGBTQ+ community. The series ran for seven seasons on NBC and ended in 1992.
Arthur, White, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty starred as four older women living together in Miami.
