David Cotterill has been widely criticized for suggesting that the hereditary heart problem that caused Enock Mwepu’s early retirement was caused by the Covid vaccine.

The Brighton midfielder announced on Monday that he has been forced to end his playing career at the age of 24 after he was diagnosed with a condition that puts him at “extremely high risk of heart disease”.

Cotterill responded to a message announcing his retirement by saying ‘so sad. And we all know what causes it,” a disguised reference to conspiracy theories about coronavirus vaccine side effects.

Fans were quick to share their outrage at Cotterill’s Mwepu comments, with one labeling it as “this week’s episode of David Cotterill has gone mental.”

Another said someone needs to “explain what hereditary means” to the former Birmingham star, while also labeling him as “a resource” and “misled”.

Cotterill appeared to be enjoying the negative attention and posted an Instagram story of his angry DMs with the caption “how are everyone’s DMs this morning, all good?”

The former Wales international has previously expressed distaste for the vaccine, tweeting last week: ‘Remember when unvaccinated people were warned that if they didn’t get the vaccine they would have to fight for their lives in hospitals?

‘I’m not vaccinated, but not dead or fighting for my life! Someone else?’

Cotterill, who now plays for Wales’ Newtown, has been criticized in the past for his conspiracy theories.
