Louis van Gaal knows a thing or two about being a Dutch manager in the Premier League and the former Manchester United boss has given his verdict on new Liverpool boss Arne Slot.
Slot’s appointment was confirmed by Liverpool 24 hours after Jurgen Klopp took charge of his final game after nine years in charge at Anfield.
The 45-year-old officially took charge on June 1, leaving Feyenoord in the Eredivisie after restoring the country to Europe’s elite during his three years at the helm.
Slot comes from the Netherlands, just like Van Gaal, who was manager of Liverpool’s rival United for two years.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Van Gaal said: ‘Yes, it is a big job because Jurgen Klopp has done a fantastic job.

‘So he (Slot) is the successor and it is always more difficult. But he is a good technical coach.
‘I think he is the best technical coach in the Netherlands at the moment. He was free at the time, so I think Liverpool made a very good choice.”
There are concerns about Slot’s appointment, not only because he has to follow in Klopp’s footsteps, but also because he comes from the Netherlands, where Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag acted before struggling in the Premier League.
Ten Hag’s future remains unclear ahead of the summer, with the Dutchman leading United to their worst ever Premier League finish, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe potentially looking to make changes.
Slot has achieved great things in the Netherlands, but there are still doubts about him
Slot, who was considered by both Tottenham and Chelsea last summer, has enjoyed huge success since joining the Dutch squad in 2021 and has become one of the most progressive coaches in European football.
He recently guided his Feyenoord team to victory in the KNVB Cup; the second trophy he has won while in charge of the Rotterdam giants, having made them domestic champions 12 months ago.
