Revealed: The England XI of players Gareth Southgate will NOT take to Euro 2024 after Jack Grealish and James Maddison joined a star-studded list of omissions worth £385m

England start their European Championship campaign in just over a week and a number of players left out will feel they have done enough to be in Gareth Southgate’s squad.

The Three Lions boss named his 26 chosen players on Thursday after dropping seven players from his provisional squad.

The exclusion of Manchester City’s Jack Grealish was the most notable, while the omission of James Maddison is no surprise.

Several players didn’t even manage to make the provisional squad, despite some of them having excellent seasons for their respective clubs.

Goalkeeper: Nick Pope

The Newcastle goalkeeper will consider himself one of the unlucky ones not to be involved with England this summer.

Pope suffered a shoulder injury against Manchester United in December and did not return to action until the final day of the season.

Right back: Ben White

Southgate said in March that the 26-year-old Arsenal defender had told England he did not want to be considered for selection.

He has not played internationally ‘for personal reasons’ since returning from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, after Southgate’s assistant Steve Holland reportedly made a ‘testing remark’ to the squad at his expense.

Centre-back: Harry Maguire

Maguire was dropped from the provisional squad, hours after Mail Sport raised doubts over the Manchester United star’s fitness.

The England centre-back has not played since April and was expected to miss Friday’s final warm-up match against Iceland. Doubts about his fitness mean that he misses a tournament for the first time under Southgate’s reign.

Center back: Branthwaite

Branthwaite only made his England debut on Monday evening as a substitute against Bosnia and Herzegovina, but there has been a lot of buzz about his selection.

Many thought he would be on the plane after Maguire was ruled out, but he ultimately missed out.

Left back: Ben Chillwell

The Chelsea defender was doubtful from the start after suffering a knee injury towards the end of the season.

Doubts remain over whether he would have received a call-up even if he was fit after an average season for the Blues.

Right wing: Jadon Sancho

The 24-year-old shone towards the end of the season and played a big role in Borussia Dortmund’s run to the Champions League final.

But he was always an outside chance of receiving an England call-up as he has struggled since his move to Manchester United in 2021.

Central midfielder: James Maddison

Maddison was widely seen as one of the players at risk of missing out after a largely disappointing second half of the season for Tottenham.

The 27-year-old left Three Lions’ training camp before taking to social media to make his thoughts known – where he suggested he was surprised to be dropped.

Central midfielder: Mason Mount

The least surprising omission. Mount struggled to keep fit during his time at Manchester United.

The 25-year-old played just 14 Premier League games all season and returned from a calf injury in March.

Left wing: Jack Grealish

The Manchester City midfielder was the most surprising move cut by Southgate and he has seemingly paid the price for a disappointing season with Pep Guardiola’s men.

He has scored just three goals in 20 Premier League appearances after struggling to stay fit throughout the season.

Forward: Marcus Rashford

He endured a difficult season for Manchester United in 2023/24, with just seven goals and two assists in the Premier League under Erik ten Hag, after a hugely impressive 2022/23 campaign.

Southgate, who has given Rashford 57 of his 60 caps, revealed the decision was a difficult one but insisted Rashford’s omission was solely down to his performances on the pitch.

Forward: Dominic Solanke

The Bournemouth striker will feel he has done everything he can to earn a call-up after an excellent season for the Cherries.

He scored 19 Premier League goals in 38 appearances as Andoni Iraola’s men finished comfortably in mid-table. However, Southgate has preferred Ollie Watkins, Ivan Toney and Jarrod Bowen to Solanke.
