Bournemouth confirm former captain Lloyd Kelly as one of 14 players they have released… with the defender expected to join Newcastle

Bournemouth have confirmed the release of 14 players after announcing their retained list for the 2024-2025 season.

The big name on the list is former captain Lloyd Kelly, who is expected to join Newcastle as a free agent at the end of his contract.

Kelly captained the team that was promoted to the Premier League in 2021/22, a role he handed over to Neto in 2023.

He made 141 appearances for Bournemouth in all competitions, although injuries limited him to just 25 appearances in all competitions for the Cherries this season.

Four other first-team squad members have also been released, but none come as a surprise as none of them featured during the 2023/24 season.

Emilio Marcondes and Jamal Lowe featured during their promotional campaign but have both spent much of the last two years on loan.

Ryan Fredericks has not appeared since March 2023 due to ongoing injuries.

Darren Randolph was brought in as third-choice goalkeeper, but the 37-year-old did not play a single game for the club.

Bournemouth also signed 21-year-old goalkeeper Alex Paulsen from Australian A-League team Wellington Phoenix on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Cherries released nine players from their youth ranks, including Ollie Eagle, Harry Redknapp, Jack Holman and Noah Crisp from Under-18s.

Ben Greenwood, Baylin Johnson, Ferdinand Okoh, Cameron Plain and Euan Pollock from Bournemouth’s development squad will also leave the club.

After a slow start to the season, Bournemouth impressed under Andoni Iraola in his first season in charge.

The club finished twelfth in the standings, but only one point behind Crystal Palace, who made it into the top ten.
