Plus-size travel influencer who wants free seats for fat fliers now says Uber and Lyft drivers should be forced to carry seatbelt extenders for ‘passengers of size’

The plus-size travel influencer who famously said airlines should offer extra free seats to obese fliers has expanded her fat-pride activism to Uber and Lyft.

Jaelynn Chaney, known as Jae Bae, posted a video on TikTok On Monday, it was argued that rideshare companies should force their drivers to make seat belt extenders available for plus-size passengers.

‘Every time I use a rideshare, I am forced to drive without a seat belt because there are no seat belt extenders available. This is a common problem for many plus size people,” she wrote in the caption of the video.

She continued, β€œNot only is this inconvenient, it’s unsafe. It should be mandatory for rideshares to offer at least one seat belt extender per vehicle.”

As the subtitles roll by in the video, Chaney is seen getting into the passenger seat of a sedan as if to illustrate her point.

Every time I use a rideshare, I am forced to go without a seat belt because there are no seat belt extenders available. This is a common problem for many plus size people. This is not only inconvenient, it is also unsafe. It should be mandatory for rideshares to offer at least one seat belt extender per vehicle. Companies must reimburse drivers for the costs, which average around $20. Although I always take a β€œuniversal” seat belt extender with me, these often do not work. If every driver carried at least one seat belt extender fitted specifically for their vehicle, this problem could be eliminated. Safety for all sizes SHOULD NOT be optional. Perhaps anticipating the criticism she might receive, Chaney wrote that she always takes a universal seat belt extender with her on rides, but they often don’t work despite being advertised as “universal.”

She added that companies like Uber and Lyft should reimburse drivers for the cost of seat belt extenders, which cost as little as $12 on Amazon.

‘If every driver carried at least one seat belt extender fitted specifically for their vehicle, this problem could be eliminated. Safety for all sizes SHOULD NOT be optional,” she concluded.

The vast majority of commenters did not seem sympathetic, choosing instead to tell her that the problem was hers and not the rideshare companies.

“I don’t mean to be rude, but if you need an extender to use the seat belt in a car, that should be a sign that you need to lock up and lose some weight,” one viewer wrote.
