Ex-Masters champion in danger of missing out on US Open and ending 23-year major streak record

Adam Scott’s 23-year run of consecutive major championship appearances is under threat after the 2013 Masters champion lost an epic US Open qualifying play-off to compatriot Cam Davis.

Davis denied Scott on the third extra hole at Springhead Country Club in Ohio, potentially breaking the former world No. 1’s streak of 91 majors dating back to the 2001 British Open.

To put his remarkable longevity into perspective, Scott’s unbroken streak is more than double that of the next longest streak among active players: Jordan Spieth’s 44.

Tiger Woods’ record is 46 in a row.

After passing Tom Watson last year, Scott’s streak is second only to Jack Nicklaus’s 146 without a miss from 1962 to 1998.

Australia’s Adam Scott could see his run of 91 consecutive major appearances come to an end in June

But now Scott, 43, must rely on the golf gods to earn a start at Pinehurst for the upcoming June 13-16 US Open.

The 43-year-old can still make the 156-man field if he retains his place in the world’s top 60 from next Monday.

He is currently right on the borderline of number 60 in the world, but could fall back as he does not play this week’s Memorial PGA Tour event.

At the very least, Scott will be an alternate for a late call-up, while the USGA could also offer him waivers.

Davis, who had the audacity to birdie the first playoff hole on Tuesday after Scott chipped and seemingly won, said he was unaware of Scott’s streak.

ā€œI don’t think I could have tried less, but it just shows how good he is,ā€ Davis said.

ā€œI had to hit a big shot into this hole to get on top of him.

ā€œHe’s an idol of mine, so it was a great wave against him.

‘So all the best to him. I hope he finds a way in. He’s right on the world rankings, so fingers crossed we can both be there.”
